How Hot is the Sun?

The Sun can neatly be divided into three parts; the Corona (the plasma 'atmosphere' of the Sun), the surface, and the core. The temperature of each is different.

The corona is much hotter than the sun's visible surface. The temperature in the corona reaches five million degrees Kelvin, or approximately 8,999,540 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature on the surface of the sun only reaches 5,780 degrees Kelvin, or 9,944 degrees Fahrenheit. Sun spots, which appear periodically on the surface of the Sun, are cooler than the surrounding surface.

The core of the Sun is the hottest by far, reaching an average temperature of 13,600,000 degrees Kelvin, or more than twenty four million degrees Fahrenheit.
