Starry Skypes
Bring the Planetarium to Your Classroom

This fall we were asked to set up a Skype call with an astronomy specialist and were able to connect one of our astronomers with a third grade class. The technology left something to be desired as the picture froze mid-way through the visit. Assuming that there may be other teachers interested in an experience like this we have assembled a package to bring a good quality video-phone conference to classroom students interested in space and astronomy.Classroom

We are anxious to learn how many more educators want to have this kind of experience. This opportunity is especially well suited for students who have questions about astronomy and space, of course. Any teacher with ten or more students who can connect our Starry Skypes laptop to the internet can set up a virtual visit. It only takes a fast internet connection for our system to bring the Planetarium director 'live' into your school, and let students ask whatever questions they can devise.

The system brings its own imagery, camera and control software so no special account or experience is needed. The system can be connected to a larger screen, TV or projector to get the best view of the images that are used by the presenter. There is no agenda for most sessions. They are keyed to the questions from the group.

At the Jordan Planetarium we do programs for private groups and school fieldtrip classes throughout the year.  Unfortunately, reduced budgets have made it difficult for schools to send their students on such a rewarding educational expedition.  Teleconferencing through the Skype video phone system makes it possible to see, hear and be seen. And it is very economical when compared to the transportation costs of an actual field trip.

Plan ahead and make a reservation at least two weeks in advance for your class to receive a celestial visitor.  Session times are limited to Tuesday thru Thursday 1-3PM and a typical session will be 30-40 minutes long. The fees are for handling and development of the system and are $35 plus the return shipping cost to send the hardware back to the Jordan Planetarium.

After making a reservation, these steps will ensure a successful exchange during the Starry Skypes session in the classroom:

  • The teacher compiles a list of most of the questions their students will want answered.
  • After those are forwarded to the Planetarium, the system is prepared and shipped to the school a few days prior to the scheduled event.
  • One or two days in advance a test session connects the teacher and planetarian to make sure the technology is working well.
  • On the planned day, shortly before the scheduled time, the teacher connects and powers 'on' the Starry Skype computer and preipherals so the link can be made on time.l

We hope that Starry Skypes can help teachers energize the space units that are so often part of the winter and spring terms in the many schools we serve.
